Stripes


Now, I may be known as the girl with all the polka dots, but I also have a soft spot for stripes. Now, this causes great difficulty because I never feel like I can pull off wearing stripes and polka dots together, so limits what I can wear together. I love a good bit of pattern mixing on other people, but on me it just looks a bit funny. Maybe it's because I'm quite small so I can't quite carry off the patterns? Or maybe it's just something to do with my confidence.

Behold my new skirt! This is actually my first ever purchase from River Island (except for a necklace in like 2004). River Island is one of those shops that I always see nice things in, but then when I get closer I realise it's been 'River Islanded'. This means it's had unnecessary embroidery, sequins, studs or beading put on it (usually saying 'RIVER ISLAND', in an obnoxious way). This really destroys potentially nice clothes for me. However, a River Island has just opened in my town so I thought I'd pop in and see what River Islanded goods they had to offer. I was quite surprised when I saw this skirt, I found it rather fetching. I inspected it for any unnecessary embellishment, but to my relief found none. So, there is the story of my first purchase of clothing from River Island.

I do like a good stripy garment though. I had a browse through my wardrobe remix set and found some great stripy outfits from the archive. However, I think I do prefer polka dots just by a smidgen.

Stripes or polka dots?

Finally, I just wanted to thank you all for your lovely comments on my video post. I will most certainly try to do one again soon. For those of you who complimented me on my accent: extra thanks! I'm from a little town just outside Liverpool, but lots of people always say I don't sound like I'm from around here so I'm not quite sure where my accent is from really. It does have a very slight scouse tinge to it, but not too much.

  1. Oh Helen you look so pretty! I normally avoid River Island for the same reason (those massive black plastic bags with RIR on them... ughhh) but they do have a few nice, unbranded items.

    As for spots or stripes? I love stripes on others, but I think I'm a polka-dot girl at heart :)

  8. Ooh, lovely skirt! I know exactly what you mean about River Island but I popped in the other day and they do seem to have quite a few cute floral pieces in at the moment. Perhaps they've run out of sequins and tacky embellishments? We can but hope...

  12. We don't have River Island in the Philippines, but I know what you're talking about re: brands that scream they are a brand e.g. Billabong. Yech.

    I can't wear stripes above the waist so I'd say I'm a polka dot girl too, but it's summer so I'm going to give mix-and-match a go. Then make my sisters "check" before leaving the house. :))

  16. you look both gorgeous in stripes or polkadots. as for the mixing prints, maybe you can put a small accessory in the opposite pattern like a bow or headband? to start small :)
    I really like polkadots, but personally have an obsession for everything nautical!

Haha I sooooo agree with your RI assessment, I bought one pretty dress in there about 4 years ago and there is literally nothing nice (or that doesn't have 'sexy' written on the arse in diamonte) I really like stripey tops, but haven't thought of wearing them on the bottom half of me. You look great! xx

  23. i hate things that have brand names plastered on them. My allegience switches from stripes to polka dots on a regular basis. yOur skirt is awesome, i love the contrasting striping.

  25. How weird, I feel exactly the same way about River Island, but I braved it and went in for the first time in about 4 years yesterday! I didn't buy anything, but there was a pretty nice belt with lots of neutral coloured bows all over it.

    I'm a stripes on the top half, polka dots on the bottom kinda girl.

    I totally agree about RI. Most of the time I pick something up in delight only to discover it's covered in sequins! Bah!

  34. dorayaki is a japanese cake kind of thing..? i don't even know how to explain it except that the inside is filled with red bean, usually. and the outside is kind of like sponge cake..?
