For my birthday at the weekend I made this yummy, yummy strawberry cheesecake using the strawberries we picked at Kenyon Hall Farm. The recipe is from the Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days book and is so delicious & rich. It has a digestive biscuit base, a cream cheese strawberry compote flavoured filling, and a mascarpone cream topping. I had to bake the cake in a water bath which ensued in chaos as the water started to leak into the cake and made the base soggy! I swear I will not make my own birthday cake next year, I will get Scott to make me one. No one should have to make their own birthday cake should they? Then again, this wasn't a traditional birthday cake. I didn't even put candles in it and have anyone sing me happy birthday!
Do you prefer a traditional birthday cake or would you have a cheesecake?

I made a cheesecake from Cake Days in a water bath and it made the cheese bit kinda watery. Wasn't very impressed. Your cheesecake looks like it cut well and I bet it was tasty!! You shouldn't have to make your own birthday cake, so I think you should demand another one from the BF!!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to you! That cake looks incredible! I absolutely adore cheesecake. For my birthday this year I had a Malteaser cake - I believe you've tried that one! - but I will definitely consider a cheesecake for my next birthday. Something like peanut butter or caramel would be good. Yum!
ReplyDeleteThis looks really delicious, good job! x
ReplyDeleteMmm! That looks so delicious! My stomach just gave a rumble!

Oh, this looks so yummy! We love cheesecakes in our family as well! And to make you feel a bit better, I make my own birthday cakes as well...
ReplyDeleteLooks delish!
ReplyDeleteI'd rather a key lime pie or a lemon meringue pie than a traditional Birthday cake any day!!

When I stayed in NZ lots of people had cheesecake for their brithday, there is a chain of really nice cheesecake shops there that sell HUGE cakes with fruit layed on the top in pretty designs. So nice!
ReplyDeleteMy mam made me a huge red velvet cake for my birthday last year but we moved and don't have an oven yet (don't even have a kitchen) so it will have to be a shop bought cake this year :(
Haha I was actually thinking of making cheese cake for dessert tonight...then I remembered it's just me at home and I didn't really need a whole cheesecake...
ReplyDeleteYours looks very yummy! A tasty alternative to cake! :)

That looks *amazing*! Gosh my mouth is watering - I just love cheesecake!
ReplyDeleteYou culinary genius, this looks unbelievably delicious! I've got the Hummingbird Bakery recipe book, but I've yet to bake anything from it. Consider me inspired... x
ReplyDeleteOh, and Happy Belated Birthday, love! x
ReplyDeleteThis looks delicious and I love cheese cake, I seriously need to make one soon!
ReplyDeleteI'd much rather have cheesecake, especially one that looks as good as this one! I can only imagine how good it tastes! Very tempted to buy the book and try this recipe, even if the water bath does sound a bit tricky! xx
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of baking a cheesecake in water. I bake rice pudding in a dish that is set in a pan of water but rice pudding doesn't have a crust. Happy Birthday to a great blogger!
ReplyDeleteBelated Happy Birthday, hun!
ReplyDeleteThat cake looks scrummy. At least if you make your own cake you can make totally what you want! Mind you, you've got a year to get the BF trained!
Hope the house sale is running smoothly. (The perfect birthday present!).
Z xx
Your cheesecake looks yummy! I had a lemon sponge drizzle cake with cream and raspberries for my birthday. Can't beat the combination of cake and fresh fruit :) x
ReplyDeletethat has to be the best looking cheesecake ever!
ReplyDeleteThis looks so yummy. Did you wrap the cake with aluminum foil. I always see that when watching food shows. They say it keeps the water out. Well the cake looks amazing anyway and I can't wait to purchase this book. I loved the first one so much.
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing! I hope you had a good birthday! I love cheesecake so much! xxxx
ReplyDeleteWoweeeeeeeee!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday!

Your cake looks absolutely amazing! Non-traditional birthday cakes were always the norm when I was growing up. My older sister always insisted her birthday dessert be a cheesecake for some reason, and for many years I always asked for birthday brownies. It's your birthday, have whatever you like. As for baking your own, I'm kind of torn on the subject. The problem is usually that I am the friend that bakes homemade birthday sweets so when it's my birthday, who's gonna do it? But at the same time I like baking so, why not? I know how you feel though, who wants to do extra work on their birthday?
ReplyDeleteI love cheesecake but I have chocolate cake with cherries and fresh cream...absolutely divine!

A belated happy birthday.
ReplyDeleteThat cake oes look so yummy and beats a traditional one hands down.

Looks great! Nobody has ever baked me a cake, and I refuse to bake my own so it's always store bought lol x
ReplyDeleteWow, that cake looks so delicious! It's a bit of a tradition for me to have a cheesecake for my birthday- I definitely prefer them over classic birthday cakes (but both are scrumptious!)
ReplyDeleteOoh your cheesecake looks lovely (despite your water disaster!) Happy belated birthday! I don't think it matters if you don't have a traditional birthday cake. My mum requested a bakewell tart for her birthday this year and it was just as lovely as a cake. Know what you mean about having to make your own birthday cake. I had to make mine while I was at uni, just wasn't the same as Mum's amazing cake creations.
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious!

That looks sooo yummy! Cheesecake is always appropriate, i could eat a whole one and more a day if it wasn't for obesity and diabetes haha. I'm sure no one could do a better job of your birthday cake than you can! Hope you had a good birthday and i HOPE someone will sing to you!
ReplyDeletethat looks so yummy, i'm proper impressed! xx
ReplyDeleteAhhh cheesecake is amazing! I would go for this over a traditional cake every time! Hope you had a great birthday :)

I'd rather have PIE!!! This year I did make myself a birthday cake, however, because I wanted a caramel cake--something I had never had--with buttercream hydrangeas in blues and purples on top. It was lovely and rich!
ReplyDeleteHAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY TO YOU, DEAR HELEN!
Happy belated birthday!
ReplyDeleteThat cheesecake looks delicious, I would much rather have it than a traditional birthday cake! Although I love baking sponge cakes, I don't really like eating them. When I was younger, I always used to have an ice cream cake for my birthday rather than a sponge cake!
I had cheesecake last year for my birthday. It was delicious. I would rather have cheesecake again then a regular birthday cake.
